If you are a gardener or you like to buy things in bulk, you may have run into the same storage problem that I have. Trying to make enough space in your freezer for all of your delicious produce!
Even though we are blessed to have an extra upright freezer in the garage, finding space for a year’s worth of produce for a family of 5 is still a challenge!!! It took me a few tries to find a solution that worked. Here is a picture of my first attempt to control the clutter.
Although it may not appear to be too unorganized, it was hard to access things without first moving other things around to get them out of the way, and there was a lot of wasted space because the bins weren’t stackable. Then I had an idea!
I decided to measure the inside of the freezer and the distance between each shelf. Armed with these measurements, I began my search for stackable plastic storage containers with lids.
I knew that I wanted to get containers that were all the same size and shape for maximum efficiency and stacking stability. I managed to find containers that fit PERFECTLY into the space that I have! And because they are plastic, I was able to use a dry erase marker to label them.
I was able to fit over a dozen quart-size freezer bags of produce into each plastic container! Now, accessing everything in my freezer is a breeze!!!
This method of freezer organization is definitely not limited to gardeners or to fruits and vegetables! You can store many other things in the same manner (like chicken, ground meat, steaks, muffins, breads, soups, sauces, broth and more!) by portioning them out into freezer bags and placing them inside of stackable plastic containers.
Now that I have this system figured out, I know that I will be able to grow and save MUCH MORE food in the future!
