Let me just say right off the bat, this is NOT a healthy recipe!!! If you are looking for one of those, check out my Deliciously Healthy Quinoa Salad which I just posted earlier today. (I had to balance this out with something healthy, right?)
I do try to eat healthy as much as possible, but this is a recipe that I came up with for my son’s birthday.
Every year, I let my kids pick any dessert they want on their birthday. This year my son’s challenge to me was to make a trifle of some sort, but he wanted the flavor and ingredients to be a surprise. Challenge accepted!!!
In case you are unaware, a trifle is simply a layered dessert that usually involves some kind of cake, cookies or lady fingers, and also has layers of pudding, whipped cream, and/or fruit.
There really aren’t any solid rules as to what goes into a trifle. Mainly, it just has layers of delicious things. Put whatever you want in it! 🙂
I know that cookies and cream is his favorite flavor of ice cream, so I decided to go with an Oreo trifle.

I took a short cut with this one by buying a pre-made triple chocolate cake from the store. Feel free to make your own cake from scratch if you want. I didn’t have that kind of time on my hands since my son’s birthday is the day after Christmas and falls smack dab in the middle of our slew of Christmas parties with our giant family!
I did, however, take the time to make my whipped cream from scratch. It’s so fast and easy to do, and my family loves the taste of the fresh-made stuff way more than the pre-made kind you buy at the store. I add vanilla, powdered sugar and a pinch of salt to some heavy cream and mix it until I get the consistency I’m looking for.

So basically, all you do is layer and repeat. I started with a layer of cake that I cut into cubes.

Then a layer of chocolate pudding.

Then the vanilla whipped cream.

And lastly, crushed up Oreo cookies sprinkled on top.

Then just keep repeating the layers in that order (or whatever order you want, really!) until you fill up the dish you are serving it in.

I am literally allergic to EVERY ingredient in this recipe, but my family told me that it is one of the best desserts I have ever made for them! My son already plans to ask for the same thing for his birthday next year, so I’d call that a win!
See the recipe below:

- 3.9 oz. box chocolate fudge instant pudding mix
- 2 cups cold milk
- 20 oz. triple chocolate cake, cut into cubes
- 8 oz. Oreo cookies (I used the minis because they are easier to crush.)
- 16 oz. carton heavy whipping cream
- 1/8 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 pinch salt
-
Combine pudding mix and milk according to package directions. Place in refrigerator to set.
-
Cut your chocolate cake into cubes.
-
Crush the Oreo cookies by placing them in a plastic bag and hitting them with a rolling pin, wooden spoon or something else that will crush them. (I used a metal lemon juicer.)
-
Put all of the ingredients for your whipped cream into a large bowl and beat with a hand mixer or stand mixer until the whipped cream is the consistency you want it.
-
Create layers of cake, pudding, whipped cream and crushed Oreos. Repeat until the serving dish is filled. (I had enough ingredients for 3 layers of each, though I wished I had used a bigger box of pudding so that I could make the pudding layers thicker.)
